What the data says
Money
Revenue by year
US dollars. BYD is converted from RMB at each year's average rate.
Net income and margin
Bars are profit attributable to shareholders; lines are net margin.
Gross margin
Gross profit as a share of revenue. BYD also makes phone components, which carry lower margins, so this is not a pure car-to-car comparison.
Attention
Wikipedia page views, 12-month average
English Wikipedia articles for each company, monthly. Attention, not sales, and it understates BYD's mostly Chinese-speaking audience.
Tesla's charging network (U.S.)
Tesla charging stations by opening year
Tesla and BYD, in one view
Reported vehicle volumes through the latest release, with the same backtested forecasts as the rest of the dashboard. Volumes are what the companies report, not sales revenue.
Head to head
Vehicles delivered, last 12 months rolling
BYD's monthly NEV sales and Tesla's quarterly deliveries, each summed over the trailing 12 months so the two compare fairly. BYD counts new energy vehicles (battery and plug-in hybrid); Tesla is all battery-electric.
Tesla
Deliveries by quarter
Production vs deliveries
Production above deliveries builds inventory; below it draws inventory down.
Revenue and operating margin
Quarterly, from Tesla's SEC filings.
Model mix
Share of deliveries that are Model 3 and Model Y.
BYD
NEV sales by month
Home market vs overseas
Overseas sales as reported; the rest is mostly China. Definitions of "overseas" differ between sources.
Overseas sales outlook
Home market vs abroad
Tesla in China: domestic vs exports
CPCA monthly figures. Exports are Shanghai plant shipments abroad; the two together are Tesla's China wholesale.
BYD: home market vs overseas
From BYD's own announcements, so "overseas" follows BYD's definition.
Share sold outside the home market
Tesla's Shanghai exports as a share of its China wholesale, vs BYD's overseas share of its sales. Different definitions, same direction of travel.
Europe
New registrations in Europe (EU, EFTA and UK)
How have the shares done next to the business?
Calendar-year share price changes for Tesla (TSLA) and BYD (H shares, 1211.HK) beside revenue and vehicle volume growth. Prices are split-adjusted and exclude dividends.
Share price change by year
Each company's price at year end vs the year before, in its own currency.
Tesla: market vs business
Price change, revenue growth and deliveries growth.
BYD: market vs business
Price change, revenue growth and NEV sales growth (volumes from 2023).

Shift the whole forecast up or down, then test a target.
Is the latest period on track?
Actual vs what the model expected, one step ahead.
Seasonality
How each period compares with the average (1.00 = average).
What moves EV demand?
U.S. indicators that could plausibly drive demand, tested against Tesla and BYD growth. This is exploratory and honest about how little data there is.

Tableau Public dashboards
The same data, built in Tableau and published on Tableau Public. Pick a dashboard; it loads from Tableau, so it can take a few seconds.
Tableau Public keeps a snapshot of the data from when the workbook was published, so it can lag this site, which refreshes daily. Open in Tableau Public.
How current is each source?
Everything here is public data. Dates are the latest observation in each source.

What is not here, and why
- Customer reviews and ratings. No open dataset exists for Tesla or BYD.
- BYD monthly volumes before 2022, and the passenger and overseas split before 2023. 2022 totals are included and reconcile to BYD's reported 1,863,494 for the year; earlier months and the 2022 split are on the roadmap.
- Raw share prices. No free source clearly allows republishing prices, so only derived yearly percentage changes are shown on the Stock vs business tab; the monthly prices themselves stay on the maintainer's machine.
- Registrations by country. Tesla's China domestic and export figures are included (CPCA). Europe runs to August 2026 (BYD not reported separately in early 2024); BYD's own China retail is not published separately; the U.S. is not included.
- Sales as revenue. Volumes are what the companies report; BYD's monthly figures are unaudited and its revenue includes phone components.
